What is the best Go-Pro for the money? Well if you are going to run them over, a Go-Pro HERO6. I bought two Go-Pro HERO6 cameras a year or so ago. I was looking fairly seriously at getting a DSLR for my content creation business. I figured it would be nice to get some action shots and have a different perspective from time to time. I had no idea how having those cameras were about to change the way that I do business.
The problem with a lot of cameras now is they are so complicated that they can’t help but being prohibitively expensive. I did extensive research on the different levels of Go-Pro HERO cameras and came to conclude that below the Go-Pro HERO6, you loose a fair amount of capability. However, the models beyond it become more expensive without alot in return. Therefore, the HERO6 is the where the law of diminishing returns comes into play.
So how have I used it? Buckle up. I have strapped them to the sides of boats, trucks, trees, and other places to get unique camera angles while I am out hunting and fishing. Of course, they work fabulously. Yet, my camera budget was taken up with those two cameras and all of the things I needed to go with them. So I started experimenting.
I ended up using them like you would a DSLR to film my boat restoration. I simply didn’t have a camera that I could use other than my phone, so they ended up being my primary method of capturing high quality video. Though they were never really meant for that, they were fantastic. I have given thought to simply never using a DSLR and only using the Go-Pro HERO6 since it is so versatile.
So, now about how I ran one of them over with my truck….
I was out checking my trail cameras on a washed out old logging road. I attached the camera to the side of the truck to get a sweet, down the side view that I really like on vehicles. I apparently didn’t get it attached all the way and it fell off at the first bump that I hit. Knowing my luck, it rolled right under the truck and my back right tire went right over it.
When I picked up the camera, I noticed the LCD on the front was out, but other than that it kept right on working. The battery, memory card, and actual camera itself seemed to have been completely unphased by the tank of a truck that just tried to kill it. As I am writing this right now, it is sitting on the charger in preparation to taking it with me on my next big hunt.
So what is the best Go-Pro for the money? I have to recommend the HERO6. I have sunk it in lakes, rivers, swamps, and ran it over with my truck. So far, it has won every encounter and keeps on recording my aimless life. When you consider the other cameras in the Go-Pro line, you won’t see much more value added past the HERO6 unless you are a major photography nerd.
